Sunyani (Ghana): overview and context
Sunyani is the capital of the Bono Region in Ghana. While relatively calm and clean compared to other Ghanaian cities, the challenges for orphaned children are significant. Due to HIV/AIDS, malaria, traffic accidents or complications during childbirth, children lose their parents and are forced to fend for themselves at a young age.
Economic situation
Sunyani has a growing economy based on agriculture, trade and services. However, employment opportunities are limited and it is difficult for young people to enter the labour market.
Political context
Ghana is relatively stable and democratic. Local authorities in Sunyani work with NGOs, but government resources are limited, which makes supporting vulnerable children more difficult.
Social conditions
There is access to basic education and healthcare, but not for everyone. Orphaned children often end up with relatives or in informal care, where there is not always enough care, nutrition or educational support.
