Mombasa (Kenya): overview and context
Mombasa is Kenya’s second city and lies on the Indian Ocean. The city has a long history of trade and migration, with a diverse population. For children who have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS, malaria or other causes, life in this region is especially vulnerable. In particular, in some Muslim communities, marrying off girls still occurs—sometimes from the age of 14.
Economic situation
Mombasa relies mainly on port activities, tourism and trade. Still, a significant part of the population lives below the poverty line. Youth unemployment is high.
Political stability
The region is generally stable, but there are tensions between local communities and the central government, especially around economic distribution and land rights.
Social welfare
Many families live in informal settlements without good access to healthcare, education and clean drinking water. Orphaned children are especially vulnerable to exploitation and dropping out of school.
