Freetown cityscape

Mayieme (Freetown, Sierra Leone): overview and context

Mayieme is a neighbourhood in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. The city and its suburbs suffered heavily from the civil war (1991–2002) and the Ebola epidemic. The consequences are still visible: poor infrastructure, widespread poverty and high child mortality. Orphaned children—especially when their parents died from HIV, Ebola or due to the conflict—live in an extremely vulnerable situation.

Economic situation

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in the world. Unemployment is high, especially among young people. Many families rely on informal trade or agriculture. Most children in Mayieme have no access to decent education or medical care without external support.

Political stability

The situation has been relatively stable in recent years, but corruption, limited government resources and tensions between ethnic groups cause structural insecurity. Children often suffer the consequences.

Social welfare

Healthcare is inadequate. Orphaned children rarely receive structural support. Many are undernourished or leave school early. Child labour is common, as is sexual exploitation. Child marriage is unfortunately still a reality in this region.
